In The Way of Shadows (Night Angel, #1) by Brent Weeks, we meet Azoth who is an orphan that hates his life. When he crosses paths with Durzo Blint, the most renown Wetboy/assassin, he begs Blint to train him. Blint accepts on two conditions: Azoth has to kill his "master" Rat to prove himself worthy and he has to abandon his street friends. It was successful. Durzo then proceeds to changing Azoth by teaching him in the art of murder and giving him a new name-- Kylar. Kylar get "adopted" by the Drakes, a not very powerful family, and befriends the Gyres that are nearly on top of the social pyramid. After that, well, he gets dragged into this messed up, but very interesting political intrigue.

The Way of Shadows is a fast-paced dynamite of a novel. I was up late into the night burning through pages to find out the next twist. I have to admit, I love a good assassin-themed novel. Weeks does a great job with characterization and I became really attached to Kylar, Momma K, and Logan; some awesome characters with convincing moments. In a character/plot driven novel, The Way of Shadows doesn't get bogged down in description and it was much appreciated.

Brent Weeks is a great story teller and his writing is plenty strong enough to carry the load. I call the book fun, and it is, but that's not to diminish it in any way. There are plenty of emotional scenes and even though I could see the strings being pulled, I still got drawn in. There's as much action as any reader could want, varied and interesting magic, tight plotting from a good number of interesting points of view. The pacing is good and there are few info dumps. I could perhaps have stood fewer discussions on the city's varied architecture but that's the very minor niggle on the back of a great deal of enjoyment. 

I recommend this book for anyone who loves a good assassin book, and to anyone who loves to get lost in a good book than just plunges you into the action

So as many of you already know Geek Girl is my wonderful and amazing Girlfriend and has a GF Book Blog as well (sort of like a brother/sister page). Even though we may have the some of the same books on our Stacking the Shelves it is due to the fact that we got two copies, one to add to my book case and one to add to hers. In Darren Shan’s creation of Zom-B Underground, we catch up with our hero Becky; also called B by her friends as her father is trying to lead her and her class mate out of her school during a zombie attack. During their escape one of B’s class mates Tyler “A black boy “has slowed down the progress when B’s father tells her to throw Tyler to the approaching zombies. B being the good child she is did as her dad told her. As the zombies start to gather around Tyler we hear him cry out to B to please help him. After hearing his plead, B is horrified in what she just has done, she breaks away from her racist father and the rest of what is left of her classmates to find her own way out. On one of the staircases in the school B runs into Tyler “ the boy she just sent to his death” a newly formed zombie and to no big surprise Tyler attacks B. B is not able to fend off this attack and Tyler ripper open her chest and bite into her still beating heart. 

All of this happens before the first chapter even starts. Darren Shan does an outstanding job of painting an image of what could happen to these people, if by some chance they could regain some of their memories and some basic functions; like speech back after turning into zombies. I like this book because it doesn’t fallow the same old draw out format of walking dead…must eat brains. Don’t get me wrong in Shan’s book they still need brains, but there is more to them besides just slowly walking around searching for that lovely grey matter.

This is the first book I have picked up from Shan but definitely not the last. I recommend this book and the rest of the Zom-B series would be good for any horror fans who like a good laugh also. I will be picking up the rest of this series for find out what happens next to B

About This Author:

Although Darren always wanted to be a writer, it was only in his teenage years that he began writing in his spare time for fun (before that, he only wrote stories if they were for homework). He bought his first typewriter when he was 14, and never looked back, knocking out loads of short stories and comic scripts, and making false starts on several books, which he never completed. He enjoyed his first taste of literary success at age 15, as a runner-up in a television script-writing competition for RTE in Ireland, with a dark comedy script titled "A Day in the Morgue" (he was morbid even then!).

Darren was 17 when he finished his first novel. Although it was never published, he relished the writing experience, and found himself focusing more on novels in the coming years, leaving behind the short-story format. For the next several years, sandwiched between university and work, he wrote an average of one book a year, experimenting with different ideas, genres, lengths and styles. When he started writing full-time, his output shot up to 5 to 6 books per year! But that has dropped back to 2 to 3 recently, due to all the travelling around he’s been doing to promote sales of his books.
